Berhanu Nega’s Shocking Encounter with Oromo Detainees Led to his Politcal Career

In a new book ("Ya Natsaannat Gohi Sii Qaddi") he wrote from Qaallitti prison, Dr. Berhanu Nega of Kinijit claims to have been forced to directly become involved in politics to save Ethiopia from disintegration.

Dr. Birahuu, a Gurage national, was a one time EPRP member who joined the armed wing of the organization as a young man over two decade ago. Accused of factionalism, disillusioned by lack of democracy and sick of the centralized control leaders wielded over the organization, he left EPRP and immigrated to USA via the Sudan. While in USA, he earned his PhD in Economics and taught for a while before moving back to Finfinne. While in Finfinne, he led an ordinary life working for himself and teaching part time at Finfinne University until he was detained (at Ma’ikelaawii) for a speech he made to University students about academic freedom. It was in Ma’ikelawwii that he became friends with Professor Mesfin WoldeMariam. It was also in Ma’ikelaawwi that he came face-to-face with the sufferings and feelings of the Oromo who constituted majority of the detainees.

Dr. Biraanuu traces the roots of his political career to a “shocking” encounter he had with Oromo detainees at Ma’ikelaawii. He admits, his “decision to directly become involved in politics was fermented while I was detained by EPRDF at Ma’ikelaawii …” (Nega, Berhanu (1998 E.C.) Ya Natsaannat Goh Sii Qaddi, p. 21)

What was the shocking encounter? Read on.

Dr. Berhanu: “What socked me and subjected me to many sleepless nights, even more than our detention, was the kind of individuals in detention, the reasons for which they were detained, and their opinions about their detention and the [Ethiopian] government. Most detainees were Oromo nationals suspected of supporting the OLF. They ranged from youth to seventy years of age. Most of them viewed Ethiopian politics through ethnic lenses. On the second day of our detention, while we were enjoying the sun, a middle aged Oromo man raised his voice and said to us in condescending tone: “You people continue to talk about human rights. You either don’t understand or you have deliberately closed your eyes to what is going on around you. What is going on is ethnic discrimination (Ya zar aggazaaz). It is blatant policy of ethnic oppression. It is futile to speak of human rights and equality while this government is in power.” He reminded me of the argument from Oromo university students who attended my speech on academic freedom but strongly argued that their most important issue was not lack of academic freedom but lack national freedom. When I heard elderly Oromo men in detention repeating almost the same words as the students, for the first time I became troubled about Ethiopia’s fate.” (ibid, p.22)

He goes on to say “As of that time, I became convinced of the fact that the Oromo issue is deeply rooted and that if such hateful feelings are allowed to continue unabated, unity of the country [Ethiopia] will be in grave danger.” (ibid, p. 199)

What can Oromo nationals learn from this?

Even the most educated habashas have to walk in our shoes before they can understand (not feel) our agony. If and when they do, and see our sufferings and pain, they are quick to accuse us of harboring “hateful feelings.” What troubles them, and calls them to action, is NOT the fact that Oromos are subjected to so much suffering and degradation by successive Ethiopian regimes. Their overriding preoccupation has always been the potential consequences of the Oromo struggle for unity and territorial integrity of the Ethiopian empire, namely the potential “disintegration of Ethiopia.” These people care more for the state than for human beings living in it. They only speak of Oromo oppression when it threatens “unity” of their empire. For a liberal democrat, which Dr. Berhanu claims to be, the paramount issue should be rights (individual and collective) NOT unity. Liberal democrats do not consider unity and territorial integrity of a state as overriding concerns over individual and collective rights of human beings living in that territory. For this “liberal democrat” however, unity comes before rights. When he speaks about lack of rights in the empire, it is not for the rights in and of themselves, but as a means of arresting their potential “negative” consequences for the system which is the root cause of lack of these rights in the first place– in this case the Ethiopian empire. No wonder “unity” comes before “democracy” in Coalition for Unity and Democracy – a coalition of habasha political parties of which Dr. Berhanu’s political party (Qasta Daammanaa) is a member. Democracy NOT for its own sake, but as a tool to maintain unity of the empire! This is a typical example of a habasha attitude. It is futile to expect them to sympathize with us let alone support the Oromo struggle for self-determination.

What can you learn from this? Have your say!

I do not think that Berhanu Nega, a Gurage, is really worried about the unity of Ethiopia but perhaps about the possible shrinking of pan Ethiopian mushrooming gurage business if Ormia becomes indpenedent. During the Deg era, Mengistu used to go around and bark high and loud saying something like," Ye innat agerachin Ethiopia andinet be shabbia ashebbari hailoch attshexxim attlewexxim." Then, a Gurage who have been carefully listening to Mengistus speech have to enquire, " Why shouldn't Eritrea be sold if it can only bring some profits," was his comment.

If Berhanu Naga, a libral democrat is shocked by the fact that Oromos of different status feel the same way on national issues, what do you expect from an ordianary habasha?

If a learned man like Birhanu who has been exposed to different cultures looses sleep over a maturity of Oromo nationalism, I can imagine how the less educated or an educated habashas feel about it.

Do I expect this man (these people) be headache free, heart attack free, sleep disorder free, ...over Oromo cause any time soon?

I don't think so!

Birhanu Nega is much worried about Ethiopian unity than people living in it.One mere fact that Birhanu has exposed is that many young Oromos are being imprisoned and tourchered by the wayane regime in Maa'ikelawwi.Improsining Oromo cannot,by any means, keep Ethiopia unity. The more Oromo is imprisoned, killed and tourtured by the wayane, the higher and wider the chance of the so called 'Ethiopia' becomes disintegrated.Birhanu would have worried much about the factors that contributed to the building up of Oromoo nationalisim (Oromummaa)than dreaming only about keeping Ethiopia unity.

What can I learn from this?
Oromumma and Habashumma are mutually exclusive.

Ayantu.

And Birhanuu does not do or say anything about Oromo in his political activities after he formed Qastadammana or Qinijjit. In the formation of Qinijjit, they allowed only habasha organizations who believed in unity of the Ethiopian empire. Other "ethnic based" organizations were not allowed. So organizations such as ONC did not join not because of political disagreements but because Qinijjit did not want them. Birhanu also bitterly accuses Dr. Beyene and Dr. Marara for their political actions and stances which differed from Qinijjit. I just wonder how Birhanu managed to confuse the few Oromos and made them part of his organization; I am talking about the likes of Birtukan Midhaksa.
Shame on them!

I have not read Berhanu Nega’s book but I have met him and listened to his political speeches many times during the late 1980s and early 1990s after he purportedly “left the EPRP” and immigrated to the United States. His assertion that his “shocking encounter with Oromo detainees led to his political career” is utterly false and unbelievable. The guy was in politics all along long before he met Oromo political prisoners at Maikelawi prison. No one can deny that the abuses Oromo prisoners have been getting from successive Ethiopian regimes were, and still are, are more than “shocking” to anyone who cares about human rights, but Berhanu Nega is fabricating the bridge between his encounter with Oromo prisoners and his political career simply to get sympathy from Oromos for his current situation in Ethiopian jail. Even while trying to win support from Oromos, the guy could not hide his hatred towards them. Read what he said:

“As of that time [after meeting Oromo political prisoners], I became convinced of the fact that the Oromo issue is deeply rooted and that if such HATEFUL FEELINGS are allowed to continue unabated, unity of the country [Ethiopia] will be in grave danger.”

There was nothing hateful in what the Oromo prisoners said to him. They simply tried to bring his attention to human right abuses against Oromos and that to him was “hateful”. Shame on him!

Biyyaa Oromoo!
I think Hashas' don't want to see independent Oromia. Our people are active in politics the last two decades more than any time. Habashas' need to know this reality, it is a high time for the Horn of Africa. The Oromo question must be get an answer if the Habashas' want to live in peace with Oromos' in our land. Peace !!

In Ethiopia, the last remain of colonial grip that is suffocating millions of people by denying them their individual and collective rights, people like Birhanu Nega are the one to be abated, not those who suffer discrimination and annexation. What Birhanu Nega is trying to achieve by this is, certainly, the trust of the habeshas so that he would be granted some place in the saved Ethiopia of the future, as a Gurage. His disrespect for the ideals of human society, i.e. freedom, has been highlighted in his reflection regarding the determination of the Oromos to be free. He substantively pronounced his position that he rather want that the Oromos get silenced by any means than he sees the Oromos achieving their goal, their freedom. The big question is how we are going to deal with such brutal individual enemies of the Oromos, who appreciate the suffering of the Oromos in the hands of successive regimes of that empire. The first thing we should do is start campaigning against Birhanu Nega and his idea, as you people are doing it. We shall win.

Who cares what he said, we know each and every Habasha’s point of views when it comes to our autonomy. People can interpret what he said in his book in a way they wanted to put, but the truth is he is very worries about the unity of so called Ethiopia NOT about Oromo prisoners who are suffering in so cruel wayane’s prison cells for many years. He was the one who totally denied our sovereignty while campaigned in Ethiopia for May election and wanted to introduce another GABRUMMAA on us. He was very informed about Oromo cases, Oromo prisoners and so on before he walked into the jail. Here my question is why he wasn’t formed any policies that allows every nations to exercise their fates in Ethiopia in his manifestos (CUD) instead of keep saying YE ETHIOPIA ADNET and Oromowoch Zerognoch Nechew.

Shame on him

I believe, we the Oromos should not be destructed with the view of such individuals at this moment. Our natural right can not be stop by Mr. Naga, Males nor bended by world super powers if we are united and focused . These people ( Habasha ) have been annoyed since Minilk came to Oromia in the 1880’s. We can bring peace and prosperity in the Horn of Africa if we utilizes our natural resources under one political and military command /organization is short period of time. Now, the only Kushatic independent state ( Somalia ) in under occupation by Tigrean invading forces. We shall coordinate all Kushatic nations in the Horn Of Africa and ship Habasha back to Yaman. Frist of all as elite of the Habahasha, Birahanu have never sympathizes about seventeen years old Oromo children for being in prisons cell instead of in High School to became a productive party of the society. What do we expect from colonizers and occupiers and indorse any realty on the ground? The young and Old Oromo were in prison because of being an Oromo or asking for right self -determination. Oromo have suffered for the last one hundred twenty plus years incrassation of this successive Ethiopian regimes. Its about a time to redouble our effort remove this cancer once and for all from the Horn of Africa!

Anonymous said...

I read Birhaanu's book. It is good he wrote it because I would have never understood what is in his mind otherwise. On the Oromo issue he said he was shocked by the uniformity of Oromo students' and prisoners' views, he said he was shocked by the number of Oromo prisoners and the attrocities they faced under Meles regime. He also mentions that Meles would not escape justice simply by saying the courts decided, even Sadam Hussein of Iraq faced justice for murders he orchestrated by court drama. Then Birhanu makes a U turn and says if Meles hands over power and exits, he would be considered as the greatest statesman in history. So as long as Meles hands power to him, Birhanu is ready to forgive him of the shocking attrocities Meles committed.
On non-political issues also Birhanu is not consistent at all. He talks about intellectual honesty, but he himself is dishonest when he completely ignores the writings (reports) of human rights organizations for decades and he makes a statement that he never believed there was torture in Ethiopia, after he heard screams of agony in the nightmarish prison. He opposes political party centralism (democratic centralism) in favor of individual conscientious decision, but he sought behind the curtain discussion with his faction not to elect Lidetu, his factional opponent. I could list many such inconsistencies in his writings and/or actions. He and his qinijjit are no better than wayane.

Habasha politicians even in jail they are full of contradiction. Is he trying to tell us he never heard of Oromo struggle? How successive Habasha governments imposed abject misery on Oromo or did he forget the virtual change has taken place in Empire last few years. What really upset me is that he said “Most of them viewed Ethiopian politics through ethnic lenses” Well, if that is the only reason they are in jail they have all the right to do so, that is liberal democracy. I am sure they didnt run for any offices. I am wondering in which lenses Dr.Naga viewed Ehtiopian poltics? another question came to my mind is that do we have to send Habasha to jail for them to realize our( Oromo) agony. Nevermind that, he still want continue with emprie reagarldess, it might seem apologetic but he is concern is still ETHIOPIA not the his cell-mates. Well well well..regardless of Habashas’ feeling our quest to self deteremintion will go on.

Taking credit for victory of the Big Guys; the case of the TPLF

It is no secrete that the quick and swift victory which Meles Zenawi gained in Somalia in two weeks period of time does not come from the military operation of planned by Melese Zenawi of Ethiopia but it is the millitary operation of super giant Millenium imperialist America. OAU, the UN and several NGO's conspiracy also have boosted the notoriety of the Ethiopian dictator regionally.

Without a doubt, the Ethiopian dictator Meles Zenawi has been supported by world's big guy, America, and even was named African new breed. As we know it, western countries still suffer the inability to dropped their bad habit of using Africans against each other in order to control the resource of the continent.

Earlier last month, Ethiopia was given a chance by the USA to carry out a full-scale war in Somalia to settle the power dispute between two Somalian brothers. Here in America when conflict arises between two conflicting parties such as the Republican and the Democratic party, logical dialog and balancing mechanism is used as method to resolve the differences. But in Africa's case, Ethiopia is used to open a war against the people of Somalia and hence Ethiopia employs all it's Military capacity, its Mercenaries, its Warplanes, Peasants and Donkeys to fight the Somali people in order to bring peace. Yet, what is so clear is that the Ethiopian government was hired to do the dirty job for the big guys who want to prevent the Islamic court from coming to power. But the truth is, the American driven war in Somalia could not settle the dispute of the people of the Cush/Somali and the Oromo people.

For the Big Guys, having their own puppet government such as the one they planted in Somalia, in Ethiopia, in Haiti, in Rwanda, in Liberia etc matters the most than the impact of the war that cripples African economy and the unprecedented exodus of refugees and civilian displacement it creates. Funny enough, after bringing war and unanticipated disaster in Somalia and elsewhere, the big Guys rush to rescue the refugees. This is their effort of putting a good face on the atrocities they have created via the use of puppet governments such as the Ethiopian dictatorial regime that is enjoying power for 16 years.

The Big Guys, deep in their heart know that they are guilty for the unanticipated civilian crisis resulted due to the Ethiopian invasion of Somalia. Now they knew that the "two weeks" blessings that they gave, dragged a staggering civilians out of their warm home to desert camps.

Further more, the Big Guys must find out by now that the war they have started in Somalia is not a winnable war when the Ethiopians failed to pull out of Somalia for that they still are engaged in desperate war while continuing committing atrocities against the civilians in Somalia and eastern part of Oromia, where they are targeting economic sectors with goal in mind to weaken the Oromo liberation fronts fighting it there.

It is true that the Big Guys have been trying to pursue the Islamic court to accept a crooked peace deal in order to help their puppet transitional government of Somalia come and stay in power just like they did against the Oromo people in 1991 when they brokered a deal that give the Tigre minority tribe to control power and stay there to date. The deal was clear and simple, they asked the Islamic court to withdraw Mogadishu. Then they told their creation transitional government of Somalia to close boarders and move to control strategic plains of Somalia.

Obviously, it really doesn't require a generic-Einstein-like brain to figure out that all these evil plots were to help their creation puppet group control power in Somalia and then start taking orders from Meles Zenawi of Ethiopia not to harbor an Oromian who is running away from Ethiopia to save one's life. Yet, to the dismay of the Big Guys, that does not seem achieved so far! Again, big guys puppet Meles Zenawi remained in Somalia and he is still fighting. So, not only Evil Meles Zenawi is screwed up, but the big guys as well.

What do we learn fro

I don't really understand what the big deal is about Berhanu Nega's expression of shock over his encounter with Oromo prisoners. At least Berhanu implies disapproval of the situation if not sympathy. I have never met Berhanu Nega nor read his "famous" book, but from what I could gather from the thrust of the discussion here, he comes across as a liberal democrat, not necessarily an enemy of Oromos. I wonder what else you guys expected from him? Advocate for Oromo freedom! We have worse enemies to worry about. We are all so gullible a lot of times.

Abbaa Biyyaa

Abbaa Biyyaa,

What we expected form Berhanu was (a) to have understood the Oromo situation long before he met some Oromos in prison; (b) to choose human rights over territorial integrity of Ethiopia and get involved in politics moved by the former not the later; (c) to leave it to the Oromo people to knoe what is best for them and not patronize them.

These are not unreasonable expectations of a self respecting Oromo from others who claim to understand his people's situation.

I really fail to understand why Dr. Berhanu tries hard to maintain Ethiopia before its people! Which should be protected first, the people or the geographical territory? My opinion is: he should be well aware that people are under collective punishment in Ethiopia; and this should change sooner or later.

I think you are making a mountain out of a molehill. The context of the statement is that hate is destructive and that those feelings need to be addressed before they do more damage. The second problem with the post is the assumption that everyone had read the book in its entirety. Thirdly, we should not be afraid of individuals and ideas that do not necessarily agree with ours. That has been a major weakness in Ethiopian politics - we just enjoy listening to our own voices! What's more Oromos need to learn to be practical. We've already wasted opportunities over nonesense in the process allowing groups to take advantage of our narrow mindedness. In fact, I suggest that we quickly endeavor to learn other languages to position ourselves in future deals.

First, taking a snippet of what one has to say can effectively distort what one wants to say. Not to mention, the writer's inability to even rephrase what has been said.
Berhanu: "As of that time, I became convinced of the fact that the Oromo issue is deeply rooted and that if such hateful feelings are allowed to continue unabated, unity of the country [Ethiopia] will be in grave danger."
Writer: "Even the most educated habashas have to walk in our shoes before they can understand (not feel) our agony."
I don't know if this is going to make you angry or not but he didn't said he understood the agony. He said he understood how the feeling of hatred (the feeling of oppressed Oromos towards the concept of Ethiopia(which he referred as Oromo issue)) is deeply rooted. This feeling might be rooted (deeply) for the wrong reasons. Ethiopia is not the one that is arresting people. But the voice of the majority of Ethiopians can only be heard in a free society. Then you can form opinion about Ethiopia. So if you will, it is the misunderstanding caused by the suppression that caused him to pursue politics. We all know there is suppression but what motivates you to get involved in politics might be different than others. You might argue your cause is grander than others but that is subjective. The only objective thing here is the end result that is free society.
I challenge the writer to write a summary of the portion where he talks about the oromo struggle instead of taking a snippet. That is weak.

to know if blogs use WYSIWYG editors or if you have to manually code with HTML.
I'm starting a blog soon but have no coding experience so I wanted to get advice from someone with experience. Any help would be enormously appreciated!

It is all well and good these chauffeur companies showing you these flash cars - but why do they not use their own vehicles - so you know what you are really getting. This vehicle is actually a left-hand drive, and the film has been revered to create a UK side of the road. Look at the Index number, German, look at the dials in the car - they are moving right to left instead of left to right. Oh so flash but nothing actually to do with the company advertising!!!!!!
