Kosovo Debunks the Myth of Globalization & Single Super-Power as Impediments to Independence

“The United States has today formally recognized Kosovo as a sovereign and independent state. We congratulate the people of Kosovo on this historic occasion.” (U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Washington DC, Feb. 18, 2008)

If there was any credence left to the notion that the era of globalization and a single-super-power has made the aspiration of a national community to an independent state impossible, then Kosovo drove the last nail in its coffin on Feb. 17, 2008.

On that date, in the era of globalization and with the blessing of non other than the “single super power” – the USA – Kosovo declared its sovereignty and independence from Serbia. The same USA, which we are told is twisting the arms of some so-called Oromo leaders to drop the idea of an independent state of Oromia has accepted, supported and justified the formation of the state of Kosovo.

In supporting Kosovo’s independence from Serbia, the US secretary of state goes on to say “In light of the conflicts of the 1990s, independence is the only viable option to promote stability in the region.” There is no mistaking what Dr. Rice is saying here. She is saying that if you are determined to achieve independence and fight for yourselves, and by so doing you disturb regional peace, then USA would have no choice but to accept your will in the interest of regional stability. This much should be clear from her statement even to the careless reader.

What is the lesson for Oromos?

An independent state of Oromia is feasible. If any Oromo reader fails to recognize this right away, it is perhaps because s/he has been demoralized by recent turn of events in the Oromo struggle. Never mind the defeatists’ “globalization and single super-power” mantra. Other nations have gained independence in the era of “globalization” with the blessing of the “single super-power,” Kosovo being a recent example. Why can’t Oromia? Forget the sellouts and the traitors. Kosovars had their share of those as well. Oromos have a choice. The fatalistic view that Oromos have no real choices to make except to remain in Ethiopia with the hope of gaining self-rule has appeared in different forms at times in history. It is rearing its ugly head once again. Oromos have a choice between rejecting this discredited defeatist view and struggling for sovereignty of their people and independence of their land or accept that view and languish in that “prison of nations” called Abyssinia, re-named Ethiopia in 1929.

There is no doubt that the world, including the “single super-power,” will eventually accept and live with an independent state of Oromia just as it accepted and lived with the states Eritrea, Kosovo, East Timor, Montenegro, etc … However, this will not happen until Oromos reject the defeatist view being disseminated by some so-called Oromo leaders and demand forcefully what is rightfully theirs – a sovereign and independent state of Oromia.

Have your say.

Well said brother! Unless and until the Oromo reject the Eritrean government lap dogs such as Frew (Dawud) and Yohanis (Lencho) Letas there will not be independence. These are bitamtuus working NOT for the Oromo but their othe clients such As Eritrea and USA. They are on a leash like a dog. They cannot advocate any thing against the interests of their clients. Your own article (Politics Makes Strange Bedfellows: Isaias Afeworki Pandering to CUDP?) is ample evidence for what I am saying here.

Thanks.

Yes Kosovo became independent not because USA wanted it but the Kosovars wanted independence. Do we have enough evidence to suggest the oromo mass wants independence or are we equating the wishes of the oromo elites with that of the oromo mass?
I think we need to continue nation building and bring oromos of diverse regions and religions under some common institutions, which would be the foundation of the Oromo people and future independent Oromiyaa.
BTW, Kosovo has functioning institutions in place.
The other issue is the way our revered leaders conduct their affairs and the affairs of oromos and we need to demand more or else let the once at the power helms do their job, even if we are subjected to some cruelity.
I know this is excentric view but I know some would feel the same.

Globalization is as old as a hill. Forget those detractors and keep focused on independence. The Oromo question is a question of independence or nothing. La lua continua.

Viva la Oromia!

Forgive me for a late comment.
To Anonymous who asked " Do we have enough evidence to suggest the oromo mass wants independence or are we equating the wishes of the oromo elites with that of the oromo mass?"

Oromo masses never consider themselves Ethiopians. If you go to the country side You can hardly find any one who pronounce the word Ethiopia properly let alone consider himself/herself ethiopian. In contrary, it is some Oromo elites who advocate for ethiopianism not the Oromo masses.
There is no evidence that the Oromo masses want to live in Ethiopian Empire but there are many evidences that suggest the Oromo masses want the independent state of Oromia. I suggest you recall the speeches, the claps, the songs, the reaction to Oromo flag during the early 90 meetings held in different part of Oromia, to name a few.

Well done
This experience at the UW should be encouraging to the entire Oromo student and community. This drama highlighted the ignorance and hostility our people face daily back home and I will not let that happen in the U.S.A and you can count on that…..Ever Year inshAllah Oromo student will be part of any cultural events held at the UW that is God given right or perhaps American given right. Don't we all love America!!!PS

If we were in the pre 2018 era, I would have said, independence is up to the Oromo people to decide in the framework of self determination. I may have added people may decide if given the chance and if other people, nations and nationalities in Ethiopia show willingness to live together by recognising each others rights to self determination indeed in the framework of the 1995 constitution. For me and others like me letting Ethiopia to free fall: total disintegration may cause unseen crisis, even for Oromia.
Then my reason was as follows. If Ethiopia disintegratesOromia will have a Monmouth task of reassembling Oromia of the pre Menilik era, not just fixing some small admistrative issues that was meant to be left behind by EPRDF such as the question of Finfinne and a little more. The new Oromia that would emerge from the rubble of empire Ethiopia would mean looking for, and indeed looking afterthought Oromia that were carved out of Oromia by the 1991-2018 political forces. 2nd I would have said if I were in the pre 2018 era that the friwiends of Oromo, I.e., the neighboring people, nations and nationalities would be scared because they would loose the benefit of staying within empire Ethiopia without a clear plan of their future and that would be dangerous for Oromia because they will not only the process of having independent Oromia but also engage in sabotaging it. This simply is because of their need for survival and fear of uncertainty for their future. This last concern still is there and it still worries me.indeed the first point remains there but now easy to handle.
Now, today after witnessing the aspirations and dreams of radical Ethiopianists dropped my views that living disintegration us difficult. My reason is clear and simple. The Ethiopia we knew before 2018 us gone. The constitutional arrangement and the project of federalism that would have the chance to keep Oromia and other oppressed people nations and nationalities has gone. Now Ethiopia is not more than a myth. The country is led by fascists who dared to invite foreign mercenaries to invade States that willingly accepted Ethiopia as it were for the past 150 years and consented to live within the empire and within the stated parameters of the 2028 Ethiopia's constitution.
Today Ethiopia is history. Tigray is defacto independent already. Oromia is close to building its own administration. Its security is being consolidated in the hands of Oromo Liberation Army.
The remaining bit of the country led and and managed entirely by Amharas, in the name of Ethiopia has created a monster out of the hoped change and desired transition of the 2018 period. They stirred the wheels of change to undesirable place.
Ethiopia is now gone, kalaas.
Now what are left now ate, first, to begin talking to Oromos and parts of Oromia that were left out and ensure no one and nothing will be left out in the independent Oromia that is to be formed. Secondly she, it is the time of engaging neighboring people, nations and nationalities to address their concerns and the future course of action.

That 8s where we are and there seems no way to go back.
